- Description: Luis Furtado’s hospitality-inspired hybrid model for medical clinics grew 4.7x in one year. HubMédica now serves 30 Brazilian clients, managing 463,000 patient messages by combining trained human teams with AI-driven software to improve patient communication.

Luis Furtado spent twenty years in education technology before returning to Brazil from Portugal. There, he met an odontologist who understood the broken core of healthcare. Clinics were drowning in fragmented patient communication, losing leads and revenue to chaos. Together, they built HubMédica, a hybrid model that combines trained secretaries, software, and AI workflows. But Luis's real insight came from watching the industry chase automation. Every platform promises to replace human work. Every doctor said the same thing when asked about AI. High-value patients do not want machines. They want people. HubMédica chose to keep humans at the center, with technology amplifying them.

## Service at Scale Was Never Part of Healthcare's Design

Patient communication in clinics is broken. Messages come through WhatsApp, email, phone calls, and scheduling systems. Front-desk teams juggle everything at once. A staff member who answers messages, takes calls, and schedules appointments will miss things. Leads get lost. Patients wait longer than necessary. The operational layer between doctors and patients was not understaffed. It was not designed.

Clinics understand the problem. Doctors want to provide great care. Patients expect fast digital communication. But the layer connecting them is chaos. The industry's solution was always the same. Build another platform. Launch another SaaS tool. Automate with AI. Make it cheaper. Make it scale without people.

Luis watched companies raise money on exactly this premise. They offered AI-powered chat platforms to handle patient communication. Clinics bought them hoping they would solve the problem. They did not.

## What Clinics Actually Need Is an Operating Layer, Not Another Platform

HubMédica became something different. Instead of selling software, they built a managed operating layer. Trained secretaries handle patient communication. Software coordinates their work. AI automates background tasks like appointment reminders, schedule confirmations, and agenda summaries.

Most clinics using HubMédica are private specialists. Cardiologists, surgeons, and cosmetic clinics work with HubMédica. High-ticket consultations mean conversion matters and patient experience drives business growth. When clinics integrated HubMédica, they did not replace existing systems. Luis built integrations instead. HubMédica connects with more than twenty healthcare platforms. A secretary works in HubMédica's interface. The platform quietly handles connections to the clinic's other tools. No switching between systems. One interface for the team, multiple systems working in the background.

The results justified the model. HubMédica grew to 30 paying clinics, generating R$51.5k in monthly recurring revenue, with 4.7x growth. The platform handled 463,000 patient messages, served 30,000 unique patients, and automatically confirmed 8,800 appointments.

Clinics kept using it because it worked. "Every minute from our secretaries is worth gold," Luis says. "Human interaction is expensive, and it needs to be preserved." HubMédica's secretaries handle the high-touch moments. An elderly patient gets voice communication. A complex medical case gets careful handling. A cosmetic clinic's Instagram leads get nurtured by real people. These moments cannot be templated. Automation happens in the background, but moments that build trust stay human.

## The Future Belongs to Teams That Keep Humans at the Center

Luis refuses to chase the AI trend, even though it would be easier. Every platform building in healthcare now promises that automation solves the problem. Doctors ask the same question repeatedly. "Do you use AI to answer my patients?" HubMédica's answer is no. Not for work that matters. High-value patients want human conversation, not machines.

This is not a limitation. It is the business model. Technology is a commodity. Anyone can build a chatbot. What they cannot build overnight is a team of trained healthcare secretaries who understand patient communication, handle sensitivity, and convert leads into loyal customers.

Luis knows scaling a business built on human execution is harder than scaling pure software. But moving to SaaS means losing the operational layer that actually works. It means losing service.

"Technology is a commodity," Luis says. "Everyone can open a cloud and create a system. It will not deliver differentiation or a final service." HubMédica's next milestone is scaling from thirty to 100 to 150 clinics while deepening system integrations and expanding across Brazil. The center remains unchanged. Trained human teams, supported by technology, provide the service layer that healthcare is missing.

That is not a limitation to overcome. It is the entire point.
