What’s UpNext: Signals from the Global Startup Circuit
The F1 Circuit of the Startup Ecosystem. Tracking founders, momentum, and signals as they emerge.
Welcome to What’s UpNext.
This week, we are looking ahead to DiscoveryX in Toronto (April 29–30) .
The signal is early, technical, and structured. Government backed research, institutional capital, and corporate buyers are aligning around commercialization. This is where ventures move from lab to deployment, and where the next layer of Canada’s deep tech pipeline begins to surface.
We will be on site with OneEleven, collaborating on the ScaleUp 10 and tracking the rooms where capital and operators are already in motion.
Further below, we break down what to watch, highlight founders building through it, and share a final thought on momentum.

OneEleven Sets the Room at DiscoveryX
OneEleven, a Toronto-based scale-up hub supporting high-growth technology companies as they move from product-market fit to expansion, will be on site at DiscoveryX with a focused activation built around access, not scale.
Their lounge is designed for small group conversations between founders, investors, and ecosystem leaders. The programming centers on decisions operators are actively navigating, from capital strategy to where AI is delivering measurable value. Additional workshops and activations will run throughout the event.
As part of this, we are collaborating with OneEleven on the ScaleUp 10, a curated group of Canadian companies already showing traction. These are companies in motion, positioned directly in front of partners, investors, and media throughout the event.
DiscoveryX brings the full ecosystem into one place. What matters is how you navigate it. OneEleven is structuring for signal, not noise.
If you are heading to DiscoveryX or in Toronto, be sure to drop by their lounge.
UpNext Briefings
We track where capital, operators, and infrastructure converge.
Each briefing distills the signal behind major events, focusing on what is being deployed and where momentum is moving next.
DiscoveryX: Where Ontario’s Pipeline Surfaces
DiscoveryX returns to Toronto’s Enercare Centre, bringing together founders, researchers, investors, and policymakers under one roof. Hosted by the Ontario Centre of Innovation, the event concentrates Ontario’s innovation pipeline into a two-day window.
The structure matters. Nine sector-specific zones replace the traditional open floor, concentrating interactions by vertical. Investors run structured one-on-one meetings. Corporate buyers and government stakeholders show up with intent, not curiosity.
The signal is shifting toward commercialization. AI programming anchored by Geoffrey Hinton reinforces institutional depth, while applied futures perspectives from Amy Webb frame where enterprise adoption is moving. The ventures here are not early research projects. They are moving into pilots, procurement, and early revenue.
This is a coordination point between capital and deployment. Government procurement, academic IP, and private investment converge in the same room. Technical founders from Waterloo and Vector pipelines are present in volume, alongside operators building in advanced manufacturing, health, and applied AI.
DiscoveryX sits upstream of Series A. Companies here are often post-grant and pre-institutional round. It acts as an early filter for Canada’s deep tech pipeline before those companies move onto global stages.
For UpNext, this is a sourcing ground. It provides early access to ventures before broader market visibility, where signal forms before narrative.

Flashpoint POV
Founder Spotlight
Through our collaboration with Flashpoint Global, we’re diving deeper into the human side of innovation — the beliefs, tensions, and turning points that shape how founders see the world they’re creating.
Every spotlight explores a founder’s point of view—not just what they’re building, but why it matters next.

UpNext World Tour
What’s Ahead on the Road
Here’s where the tour is heading next as we continue tracking emerging signals and spotlighting founders across global ecosystems.
Coverage varies by event and may include both in-person and remote coverage. More details will be shared as the tour takes shape.
More events will be added as they are confirmed. If you are planning to attend any of these or think there is an ecosystem we should be paying attention to, let us know where we should show up.
Final Thought
Momentum Shows Up Before You Feel It
Momentum is often confused with activity. More meetings. More posts. More motion.
That is usually just noise.
Real momentum shows up when the system starts returning signal without force.
A reply you did not chase.
An introduction that comes back around.
A room that opens before you ask.
Over the last three months, UpNext Global grew 460%.
Early, but directional.
It did not come from forcing distribution. It came from consistency. Recaps. Spotlights. Conversations that compound.
That is the shift.
To everyone reading, contributing, replying, and showing up in the rooms with us, thank you. This only works because the signal is shared.
Momentum is not something you create through effort alone. It is something you recognize, then move with.
